| The most common type in BEF seems to have been the 15cwt general purpose truck, often referred to as a Morris (although it was built by several manufacturers in addition to Morris). These were 4-wheelers with a soft top. Pictures of equipment abandoned by the BEF in Dunkirk nearly always include Morris trucks. Bedford and Austin trucks were also used. There are no plastic kits of these early war vehicles (or, indeed, of any British trucks) in 1:72 scale. Matchbox did the gun-tractor version of the Morris in 1:76 scale, but it is now out of production. Airfix does an airfield refueler version of a Bedford (as part of its RAF refueling set) that could be converted into a troop truck (but I think it might be a later version than the one used in France; I think the early version had a boxier looking nose). You can get 1:76 scale models of most early war British vehicles in resin from various manufacturers, some of which are very nice models. You might want to reconsider the scale of your proposed diorama. |
