Forums - Modelling / Smallscale

The construction forum is for the discussion of small scale AFV modelling. Usually this refers to 1-76th and 1-72nd scale AFVs.

Hi Doug,

When I first started modeling with my own money, I remember running to the dime store (Woolworths) with only one dollar. I would buy an Aurora (ESCI) tank for 88 cents and, after sales tax, have a nickel left over for a piece of candy to give me the sugar rush to run the fifteen minutes it took to get home! So I began with 1/72nd scale.

I remember being called a "Braille Scaler" and when asked why, I was told I would go blind adding all the details I was getting accustomed to doing while following along the conversion articles in the IPMS/USA Journal. I took that as a compliment for being able to do things many would or could not do.

From my first simple conversion, a SdKfz 11 halftrack with armored cab and hood and wooden body, to painting a detailed nude on a bombardier’s jacket as well as his eyes(!) I knew I felt special. So, the connotation must be with the association upon first hearing it.

When Alex Clark puts out another masterpiece, aircraft or armor, I smile since I know the compliments he gets are the same I received with my meager accomplishments so many years ago.

I then moved to 1/35th scale and was one of the first who insisted on adding the correct casting numbers on my models whenever possible. I even wrote to AFV News to correct D. P. Dyer about his drawings (on which I relied heavily). The point of this is that, for me, the 'Braille' portion has to do with the size of the detailing I am working with.

Regards,
Saúl
