I'm in the process of building Trumptere's AS-90 Self Propelled gun and have a few observations.
I don't build a lot of modern armor, so when I do, it is Straight out of the box.
To make a long story short. I am almost done and my overall impression is this kit is average at best. What I have found is there are mold seams on all the parts, so lots of clean up is needed and some parts are small. The tracks are nasty as not only do you have to clean them up so they fit together, but they have ejector pin marks. I know that Trumpeter is using these new slide molds, but the turret has a ridge where the sides and top meet, I believe this is due to the molds. The upper hull has a thin ridge of flash that needs to be cleaned up. Some of the part, such as the shovels, have gigantic locator pins.
Ultimately, I think this kit is worth the money, it will look fine in the back row and the challenges it poses are nothing an average modeler can't handle.
But what I don't understand, and the point of this e-mail, is that Trumpterer is not a limited run or Cottage manufacuturer. I am not spolied (we often hear that response). Rather, I would much rather have clean, sturdy parts that fit well—like Revell from a major manufacturer. I think that Trumpeter (as well as Dragon) should concentrate on the basics.
Just a few thoughts from a guy that just spent 2 hours cleaning AS-90 track links.
