Steve,
This nomenclature thing has confused me for years as well. From what I've seen in all my T-34 books, there seems to be a discrepency in nomenclature between eastern and western sources. Western researchers (which is primarily Zaloga, but a few others as well) change the designation from Model 1942 to Model 1943 when the turret was changed from the smaller, 2-man, oval turret to the larger, 3-man, hexagonal turret. Most kits on the market also follow this naming scheme.

But eastern European researchers make the change from Model 1942 to Model 1943 when a commander's cupola was added to the hexagonal turret. Meaning that the early hexagonal turret without the cupola was a Model 1942, but with the cupola was a Model 1943.

Who's right? I would tend to follow what the Russians themselves use for naming their own tanks. Most of Steve Zaloga's work was written before the "wall" came down, so I would be very interested to know what he would have to say about it now, with newer information available from Russian sources.
