Hello Jim:
From my own experience!
Italeri does not have the greatest kits in 1/72, I have purchased the Jagdpanzer IV from them and also the one produced by Dragon. Well, the Dragon one even has an aluminium barrel and photoetched parts!
For a nice Sherman I'd suggest you the one form Dragon, even though I don't build US AFVs (not usually)
Hasegawa produce very poor 1/72 kits that cannot be compared with... dragon. They are not the worst though, but some details are awful.
I storngly recommend you Dragon, and also UM, which currently has a range of models that complement the Dragon ones.
In regards of Dragon, the older types (up to early 2005) can be of varying degrees of quality. some of them have a die cast hull with engraved details that are simply too big. Newer models are in injected plastic and look much better. Also, their Elefant has been reissued with plastic tracks (Dragon is yet to discover the link and lenght tracks) instead the single tracks from back 2004. They were a nightmare to build, you know, at such a scale it was painful.
In all case, avoid Airfix, Heller and ESCI old kits, they are simply obsolete compared to today's standards. I have tried Revell, not bad hey, but they'rereboxing the Char B1 bis from Matchbox, so better check for references before comitting your money.

hope it helps,

Juan
