On the whole, I prefer the cleaner look of Tamiya and AFV Club's box art, with just a painting of the vehicle that's in the box against a plain background. Once manufacturers start trying to show the vehicle in some sort of setting (as Dragon does), the effect is nearly always cheesy (although every now and then they get it right - the Dragon Ardennes Tiger II box top is pretty effective). A long while back, Tamiya and the other Japanese manufacturers' box art always depicted the vehicle in some kind of combat scene, adopting a distinctive slightly impressionistic style that Academy still uses for a lot of its AFV box art.

I've noticed that with their new 1:48 scale range Tamiya is once again showing the vehicle in a historical setting. The paintings are generally well done, but there is a strange emptiness to the scenes (which are devoid of troops) that makes them appear rather surreal.

I also like it when the side of the box includes paintings of historical vehicles from different angles. Again, Tamiya do this very well. But a few photos of the actual model, painted and assembled, are also very welcome.
