Gotta' believe that it has something to do with the people (builders) that were avid model builders and built everything they could in the 70's and 80's are now at the age to be the decision makers within the producing model companies. Couple this with the new technologies and of course their own personal wish lists (add a dash of "mine's better than yours" and there you go...
just my light-hearted 2 cents...
