I have read several accounts of the initial invasion into Russia and I think the box top is reasonable. Germany was primarily a Christian (Lutheran) country. The average Wehrmacht or Luftwaffe Fritz was not an ardent Nazi. They believed (or were propagandized into believing) that they were fighting Godless communism.

In Hans Erich Rudel's book there are descriptions of Russian (probably Ukranian) villagers bringing out long hidden (from the secret police) religous relics. Rudel even claims to have attended services with the Russians in newly reopened churches. You definitely get the sense that the villagers regarded the "Christian" Germans as liberators from the brutal atheistic communists.

Not all Germans were Nazis. Granted they went along with the plan. The Waffen SS were a different story as were the Einsatzgruppen. But I believe the average Hans or Fritz just wanted to do his bit and go home.
