>>I'm sure they'll be fine, afterall they're all built like Sherman tanks :-)
The Shermans & WW II stuff they're not too worried about. The WW I Mk IV and Whippet, however, can't be moved from where they are today as they are literally rust held together with paint. The entire area over the tracks on the Whippet has rusted through and there is a 3" thick layer of rust flakes where that surface should be. The Mk IV has a couple of cracks in the armour running the entire height of the side plates on both sides. The only way to move these puppies is to find some magic way to stabilise them before touching them. Bet you couldn't even open a hatch without a major structural problem arising.
Looking at the costs of that sort of stabilisation, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that the Army would scrap them in place rather than spend the 100's of thousands of dollars to move them & keep them intact.
>>It would be nice if they get moved to an indoors facility. The photographs I've seen of the exhibits do show them to be rust buckets.
With this I completely agree.
From a personal perspective, AMPS has built it's national show around acccess to this collection. Even if the move takes the vehicles to the best new home in the world, I dare say the collection will be out of service for thebetter part of a year and I dare say we'll have to deal with moving the show into Virginia and being withuot the collection for at least one show, maybe two...
