As for me, I grew up in the 60s. I was very aware of the cold war, but that awareness was almost entirely necular. The building of bomb shelters, the watching bomber formations circling in the sky... on and on. I didnt really think much of a possible ground war, the thought seemed to be that any ground war would soon go nuke anyway. On the other hand TV was FULL of WWII movies (not to mention Hogans heros). You could not get away from them, not that I wanted to. Pictured in the movies were your basic run of the mill Sherman (I known, I am going to catch a lot of flack for that statement), and all the various German tanks that the US tankers were so afrade of. For my self, the German tanks just looked more interesting, but I think the opinion of the US tankers had a real influence (keeping in mind of course that this was Hollywood's US Tankers). One other thing, I was not even aware Japan had tanks until I started following Track-Link! That shows how much presentation they had in the movies. So... perhaps, its Hollywood we need to blame/credit here.... my opinion.
