| Subject: | Resin is easier! Notes for first time buyers- | |
| Date: | Aug 31, 2005 |

I accept that people are hesitant to move into resin, but there's realy no need to be. The price issue is obviously difficult, but in terms of the build, consider the following-
1)Buy a good starter kit. Obviously there is tremendous variation among the resin manufacturers and if your first model is a nightmare, it will put you off. Post in the kits forum saying aproxomately what you're after and someone will come up with a recommendation- or check the reviews section.
2)There's no need for tools beyond those you would use for plastic models. Superglue, a good razor saw, a scalpel, some files, drills and sandpaper. If you keep it simple, you could buy the lot for less than the cost of the average Tamiya tank.
3)The health implications aren't anything to worry about. Remember that everything from burnt toast to unleaded may give you cancer, but you don't go out of your way to avoid cars and toasters. Just follow the safety instructions that come with the kit and you'll be OK.
4)Clean-up is no worse- and frequently a lot better- than the same job in plastic. I would rather fill air bubbles galore than work my way around a plastic kit filling and sanding ejector pin marks and sink holes. The seam line is generally easier to remove as are the sprue attachment points.
5)However good you think the latest offerings from the mainstream manufacturers are in terms of detail- resin castings can be so much better.
6)This is the last and possibly most important point- subject matter. Resin kits are available covering subjects that will never, ever appear in plastic. Austin K2 fire engine? German soldiers waltzing with young women? Clarke Air bulldozer?- yes, they're all currently available, but only in resin.
Of course, I have to emphasise that the above points are dependent on the manufacturer and the kit- but then it wouldn't be fair to compare a 1970's Monogram kit to the latest Dragon Flak 88 would it?
