I went to Washington DC last year on vacation and can highly recommend the both Air and Space Museums. If you want to go to the Dulles (sp?) site you can pick up a bus ticket at the main museum lobby but I recommend getting there early to get tickets, they sell out fast. The bus leaves from The Mall and is a nice restful hour ride to Dulles. The Metro is a great way to get around, goes just about every where. I also recommend seeing the USMC Iwo Jima monument, very impressive especially at night. As far as hobby stores, the only one I know of is Meteor Productions 7401 Fullerton Rd. Suite H, Springfield, VA. They are open Monday thru Thrusday 10 AM to 6 PM and Fridays 10 to 9, Sat. 9 to noon. They are mainly aircraft stuff. Unfortunately I didn't find out about them being open to the public until I came home from my trip. Phone number 703-440-8720.
Have fun.
Eric
