A couple of other, less expensive methods:
1. Bounce the light off of white card or onto the barrel.
2. Place a diffuser, piece of thin white cloth works, (If you're using a piece of cloth DO NOT LET THE DIFFUSER REMAIN FOR ANY LONGER THAN NECESSARY, YOU WILL BURN A HOLE IN THE IT) over the light source,
Both of these methods remove the 'hot spot' caused by the fiiment in the light source.
