| Subject: | We build Models... | |

Hi guys,
A great topic, and I decided to hesitantly toss in a few perspectives.
Although I have been tempted for years to write a review, I never have.
Why? There are several drivers, and I may yet get over them and do a review before I pass on. Here's a few...
Rule #1: I build models for fun, and to unwind from stress. A little fine motor skill work takes a load off my mind.
I build Models, not the real thing. If I wanted to build an exact replica of an Abrams, I would need every engineering drawing, review each drawing to reproduce a part, and review again....See Rule #1: Not fun!
I also dabble in artwork, and I remember an art teacher instructing us that you don't have to represent every detail to describe something. Sometimes a line or a shadow is enough to represent, and your brain fills in the rest.
Maybe because of that, I consider myself a one-meter modeler. If it looks good at one meter, I'm happy.
Remember the slogan in Soviet tank factories: "Perfect is the enemy of good enough." I try not to forget that the model companies are the real risk-takers, and if I can buy a darn close model with a few things that can be upgraded, I'll live with that because I didn't spend $350K for the tooling plus production run costs! Having said that, I'll spend my money wisely on kits (largely based on TL reviewers' experiences), and I won't knowingly buy a kit that will be tremendously time consuming to get in shape. For me, that's a huge review value!
After all that, I ask myself "Would anyone want to read a review that I write, because my perspectives are unusual and I don't have the mindset necessary to give a good accuracy check?" So far, the self-answer is no.
OK, I'm done!
TIY,
Matt |
