Goofs, typos, misidentified photos, and my all-time pet-peeve...REHASH!
I'm very wary now of military reference books because C 2004 and C 2005 sure doesn't mean that the info is current to 2004 or 2005. There are books printed 2005 that contain info from the 1980s and 1990s, which one can only obtain and see if one joins some book club where the club sends a series book a month.
Sometimes I buy books for just the photos; photos I can only see in defense magazines such as Janes ($375 a year) or another defense magazine ($95 a year). Most times I connect the book to a model I have, but not always.
Publishing remains a hard-to-enter field. I can't believe publishers print military books where the author(s) have no clue about military equipment or even ask the proper questions. A lot of books out there contain specs, facts, and stats one can read from official military or company websites, not to mention information seemingly taken from another book. What's even worse is that some authors go to the exact source (say a military unit) and yet they never write about any soldier opinions on equipment or interview answers....so why go to the unit? There are some books out there where the info is so scant, so vague, so basic that I would believe modelers can write a better AFV book and get published.
Another pet-peeve are B/W photos of modern equipment. Humans don't see in B/W, dogs do. So unless the book is about wars, equipment, and gear before color film, or the photo was actually taken in B/W, I see no reason a book should have B/W photos unless it's an actual text book rather than reference/photo book. To me, printing color photos B/W is a sign of "cheaping out."
