Subject:  Influences and Inspirations on your ModellingList thread.

I was looking through my box of old Military Modeler magazines (the defunct US one). I used to get these when I was a kid in the '80s, they inspired and influence me to get "serious" about making tank models.

At the time I idolised the work of Randy Roy. He built mostly German WW2 pieces. One of his best, I think, was a kit-bashed Tamiya/Nichimo Tiger I late model, a late model Brummbar converted from the Tamiya mid. kit and an Sd.kfz.7 with 150mm howitser combination in DAK colours. I was introduced to such concepts as washes, dry-brushing, sheet styrene, etc. in this magazine. I now collect as many of these old magazines from the '70s and '80s and still enjoy looking through them.

The other great influence on my modelling is my uncle. He drove Grants and Stuarts around Burma in WW2. He was interesting in my model tanks... although not too happy about my fascination with the German stuff. In order to get me interested in British subjects he bought me a Tamiya Grant and LRDG truck. This got me going on the British tanks.

I thought it would be interesting to hear other modellers' influences during their "formative" years.

Paul.
