I had to deal with this 11 years ago when I left Australia to move overseas. Like (it seems) most of the older modellers here, I was not able to afford to buy many kits when I was a teenager, but the ones I bought I built and finished (I still have some of them!). Once I started earning proper money, I bought way too many; the fact that I worked in a hobby shop made it even worse. I ended up with a vast hoard of unbuilt 1:35 scale military kits - each box contained all the resin accessories and other stuff that I intended to add to it. When I left Australia, my collection was stored at my parents' home, but a couple of years later they sold the house because they'd retired. So I had to get rid of it all. I gave a lot away to some younger modellers who didn't have much money, but a fair amount of it was simply thrown away. It was heartbreaking, and it made me realise that I was never going to build more than a fraction of the stuff I bought in my lifetime. Since then, I've only bought a few large kits. It didn't stop me from buying a lot of wargaming models, but I've made better progress with completing those.
My son will probably inherit my collection of models and reference books when I shuffle of this mortal coil. Whether he'll appreciate it is another matter. I suspect that, assuming I live long enough to actuallly deal with it and don't snuff it suddenly, I'll give a lot of it away so noone else has to deal with it.
I'm depressed now... |
