I've always been guilty of buying kits well before I'll ever build them. What I've discovered is that as my skills grow, it actually takes me longer to finish a kit. As a teenager I'd build a kit, airbrush it, and throw it on the shelf. Now I add PE, resin, metal track links, and then weather it for what seems like forever. If I'm doing a diorama, forget about it. By the time I paint and weather the vehicles, figures, and buildings, I'm lucky to finish a dio in less than 8 months. During that time I'm always planning out the next 5 dioramas, and so I start buying the kits I need for those. Unfortunately, as time goes on I'll see new pictures, get new ideas, or new kits come out, and I'll change my mind about the plans for the future dioramas, and wham, half the stuff I bought for them is no longer needed! I end up selling the items on ebay for a loss. Has anyone else had this problem? So my new mantra is to never buy anything unless I've got the plan for the dio completely set in my head, and to only think "one diorama" ahead.
The other thing I do is to limit my stash to only one set of shelves. It simply can't grow beyond that set of shelves in my basement. Does the strategy work? Not if you ask my wife...and besides, with some creative stacking there's always some empty room on those shelves somewhere! |
