Paul,
I have a suggestion for your next building challenge (after the holiday project). I know the people who visit this site have varying skills and experience in modeling. Some probably are intimidated by various techniques or don't even know what they mean.
My suggestion is that you select a kit, any kit and announce that, say starting in Jan or Feb or whenever on a certain date, that anyone who wants to play along purchase that particular kit. Then week by week, and step by step, everyone follows along and builds that same kit. Each step is photographed and posted by the lead modeler (or even a couple of different “professionals”). The lead modeler sets the pace and talks about what he did and how, then everyone can comment on how they are doing and what problems they are encountering as they go along. Everyone works at the same pace one step (from the instruction sheet) at a time. Everyone can probably manage one step a week and thus keep pace with the project.
New modelers or those trying to improve their skills can learn as they go. Just learning how to over come basic kit problems (like a bad fit or pins in the wrong place or filling sink marks) would help many people right off the bat. Don't do the photo-etched or other aftermarket stuff, just right out of the box in order to include as many people as possible. If you pick a Sherman or a Tiger and someone doesn't like German or American armor, that's tough, this is an online class and if you want to learn, you bite the bullet just once and play along. I'm a decent modeler but I know I have a lot to learn. Once the kit is complete, everyone can send in photos of their kit.
