I think that first it isn't mandatory to use any of these.
I've seen some moels without any aftermarket stuff, but suberbly painted, and these looked amazing.
For people who just start out, I would advice them to stay away from aftermarket stuff except for a affordable aftermarket barrel, because that is just easier than sanding the plastic barrel and making it look convincing.

Also when you just start out, begin with the cheaper brands like Italeri or Trumpeter. These have good kits, but if you're not satisfied or are building your first kit, it's less frustrating when it doesn't work out.
