Tamiya set the standard through the 70s, 80s and 90s and i still think they made some the best engineered kits ever. But radio control and toys became their focus and 1/35 became the red headed step child.

Two things really put me off Tamiya though. First is their propensity to release old crappy kits in conjunction with newer kits by other manufacturers. That's just cheesy and low class. Especially since they make no effort to improve their kits after the first production run.
Which leads me to the second reason I just don't feel compelled to buy Tamiya any more - they just can't seem to get the variant train rolling.
By all accounts, it should be Tamiya releasing a 38T series, not Dragon. they already have excellent running gear and lower hull. What's stopping them - 5 years ago. They had a nice 105mm howitzer in the Wespe, yet let AFV Club steal their thunder forthe towed version. They have a great 76mm Russian AT gun in the Marder, but we'll never see the towed version from Tamiya.
They also appear to lack the insight of the value of their own molds. It would take only one sprue to upgrade the 232 from early to late, or even to the 263 radio version. Heavy sigh.
Outside of softskins, German armored cars and late Panzer IVs, there isn't much in the Tamiya catalogue that's interesting anymore.
Of course, having said that, I will look at the Stug III and hope to find it on discount somewhere.
