I've got two tips - I was buying some cat food at the store a while back and found a small chrome metal water dish, about three inches across. I use this for my decals. If a decal breaks up or floats off the backing paper the dish is so shiny and smooth that I can use a small brush to scoot it out of the water, it will slide and not break up on any rough surface or corners.

My other tip is a real life saver, or rather a real 'Knife saver'. Most of my hobby knives are round and when put down will try and roll off the bench. I cut a short length of square section tube and push it over the handle - end furthest from the blade of course :-) This stops any rolling and saves my foot from possibly being remodelled too.
