You have hit the track nail squarely on the head knocking the dancing rivet counters off. Particularly with German armour this was a problem as they changed virtually from tank to tank, especially the Tigers. You can discuss convention with WWII German stuff, not absolutes, because the 'foreign' concept of mass production was only starting to catch on during the war. Even now Leopard IIs are built in batches and innovation and change is constant. How can one model manufacturer keep up?
