If someone (Paul?) is looking for some, I have a box full I would be willing
to part with for a price. Most from about 1978 to the late 80s, and a few
from the early and mid-70s. I used to pick them up at the Stars and Stripes
Book Store when I was stationed in Germany, then subscribed when I came back
to the States. Before I rip on it, I have to say that this magazine was the
catalyst that made me decide to model AFVs and military figures, rather than
wingie-thingies or anything else.

Back "in the day," Military Modeler was THE armor and figure mag of the U.S.
When Duane Pfister began dominating the articles with his somewhat
questionable conversions and scratches ... and (this was more important) I
began to see articles reprinted verbatim from ten years before, I decided to
give up on it. FSM was a breath of fresh air, and gave much more honest
reviews (I have all FSMs, except issue #1).

Of course, now we have tons of mags to pick from, but back then, it was
Military Modeler or (if you could find it) the U.K.'s Military Modelling.
Airfix had a mag (mostly A/C, but a few nice armor articles), and there was
AFV G2 (I'd love to get more photocopies of these), Army and Navy Modelworld
(really rare in the States and I loved it ... when did they cease to
publish?), and a few others (most didn't last more than a year), but other
than that, your choices were mostly limited to history or 1:1 vehicle mags,
like Army Motors and Wheels and Tracks.

Back in those days, I really couldn't afford much more than one or two
subscriptions for modeling (not when I was also getting Playboy, Penthouse,
Club, Oui, Swank, Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated, National Geographic,
Smithsonian, Science, Omni and Discovery ... can you guess I was single?).
Now I look at my ISP fee as another magazine subscription ... considerably
higher per month, but well worth it for the info.

Gotta stop the rant and go,

Bob
