Hi Brandon,
Don't feel too bad about not being able to get your CD to run. I am in the
process of trying to run the T-34 disc for a review for my local hobby
store. Notice that I said that I am trying. I have not been able to get any
of the films to run and navigating the files I can get to run has been
troublesome to say the least. I am running the disc at work since we have
far better hardware and operating software than I have at home (Pentium III,
the latest cd player, etc.) since we have to be able to run 3d architectural
software. And still no dice. I also heard there were problems wit the Tiger
disc as well. Has anyone heard from the aircraft folks yet to see if they
are having trouble, too?
The bottom line is this. These things cost $50.00 US and, so far, I don't
know anyone who can get one to run successfully. Since these are supposed to
be for entertainment and modeling research they should be easy to operate on
a number of different "platforms". They are not supposed to be such a big
pain in the neck. And you certainly should not be required to go to the
lengths that some have described to try to access the information contained
on these cds. I'm starting to think that the problems are not with us. They
are with the folks who programmed these discs to begin with. I think we have
a batch of defective products that should be recalled and "retooled" so that
they actually work as advertised. Were they rushed onto the market before
they were properly beta tested? Are they expecting us all to plunk down
$50.00 US for version 1 and then expect us to follow suit with version 2,3
and so on?
It has been my experience that when too many people have trouble running the
same software it is usually the fault of the people who wrote the software.
Not the other way around. Unfortunately, I'm starting to think that the
concept of these discs was a very good idea but the execution of the concept
was not.
Happy Real World Modeling,
Mike Siggins |
