Hi Paul,
Basically, you are correct. However, the devil is in the details, as they say. A few years ago, I was involved in rewriting the diorama judging rules for AMPS to make them fit into the standard AMPS 10 point judging system. From the beginning of AMPS we had seperate catagories for vignettes and dioramas. And every year there was always a few entries that fell between two stools as it were.
As we were rewriting the judging rules the debate began concerning the definition of vignettes vs. dioramas. We could never come up with a clear enough distinction between them. Because of this, the mechanics of the AMPS judging system and the fact that some of us never saw the difference from a pure judging mechanics point of view, we felt comfortable in doing away with the distinction altogether and now we have one diorama catagory only. We have been working with this system now for about four years and sorting out the entries has never been easier. And the judging has not suffered. In fact, I think that it has even improved.
