| Subject: | Vignette vs. Diorama - the war is on | |

And I wonder why I get in trouble at work when I try to write seriously and then just gotta let that tongue in check side of me run wild?
Paul, the dio/vig statement was my simplistic minded version of a joke. It's one of those ongoing battles between the forces or "There is a difference" vs. "Nah huh, there's NO difference". It's a no win, no brainer, not worth my time any more. You end up picking sh*t with the chickens before all is said and done. I've witnessed adult builders battle it out with a model show host over the "proper category placement" of his actually piece of cr@p. "Yeah OK, put it into the Kid's category and I'll make sure you win something today".
Personally I'm with Ian's definition. Vignette is a simple, eloquent, snapshot in time and a dio tells, elaborates, a story - think action, tons of it, blood, guts, severed limbs - oh wait, that's another thread. So Paul, does this mean that you're going to censor picts of my dio/vig of the starving pack of wild cats feasting on the frozen Russian soldier????????? Really tough making 1/35 scale cats too.... especially sinking the fangs into the frozen flesh part.
I tangled with the dio/vig topic on another site and ended up agreeing to the terminology: Military Model Scene. OK, you build big and use 35 pages of text to explain the thing you built, I build small with an obvious story. Who is the better story teller? 95%, based on a Reader's Digest (that bastion of knowledge)survey, of diorama model builders CANNOT build a what is considered a "stand alone" dio without include a hefty quantity of text to explain the scene. Think about how many times you've read a thread where someone is attempting to build a dio and has explained the scene down to the dog tinkling on the tire of a jeep. Most of us are above average intelligence unless we left the cap off of the glue one too many times. Build it and drawn me in. Let me tell you what I think the story is and see if we agree.
This is a neat hobby that we're involved with. And that's what it is, a hobby. We need to get out of the bolt counting, measurement incrementing, show judging whining mentality and just enjoy and share what we each are talented enough to build. |
