Rick is correct when it comes to "traditional" art. As it applies to modeling I think the correct explanation would be that a vignette is a relatively small scene with a single vehicle, a small amount of figures or figures alone portraying one specific action or storyline. The diorama is generally larger with multiple vehicles and or figures in which multiple story lines may occur simultaniously. Both of these portrayals involve these elements interacting in some type of environment with varying degrees of detail. That doesn't mean that the action in a diorama is not coordinated and disjointed but rather is meant to depict the actions of several elements together for a common theme. The diorama can also portray different elements in the same viewing area performing different functions. An example would be infantry with battle gear on marching past a tank crew performing maintenence on their vehicle. Two seperate stories but a quite common juxtapositon of stories in a real setting.
By the way, I sincerly believe that what modelers do is definately an art form in which the assembly of materials in combination with painting skills produce a visually satisfying product in three dmensions. If you are making displays depicting figures and or vehicles interacting with each other in an environment then you also must use compositional skills, which in my opinion are the most important element in any work of art.
