Well, I would not call myself an expert by any means, so its going to be interesting to hear what some of the others have to say. But you really cant go wrong with a Panther. Fairly simple in that there is not a lot of fine detail. No complex shapes to try to make fit right, and you end up with a really neat looking little beast at the end. As to the kit, I know I am going to catch flack here, but you should be able to pick up the old Tamiya Panther A real cheap. As far as accuracy, its crap, but its an easy build and good to cut your teeth on and probably one of the cheapest kits you will find out there. If you can squeeze out some more money then go with any of the DML Panthers as they are much more accurate and have better detail. The draw back is they also have individual track links, which look much better, but take a lot of work and may be something you may not want to tackle at this point.

Another possibility would be any of the Trumpeter Russan KV series. They are very inexpensive and are great kits, and you get two sets of tracks so you dont have to use the links. They are not German, but you could put German decals on and claim its a captured tank.
Just my opinion.
