Andrew,
my advice is to build some of the older Tamiya kits for the time being. They are less expensive since many of them were originated almost 30 years ago. They have fewer parts than many of today's kits, but are well designed and easier to build. The point for now is to gain experience and mostly to have FUN.Tamiya and Academy are very similar in kit design-alot of Academy's tanks are Tamiya clones-and also the older Italeri kits are good choices. The older kits are less complex, so its more likely you will actually be able to finish them.
Go to the gallery section here on Track Link and check out vehicles other modelers have made.Find some you really like and try and copy them.It doesn't have to be exact, but as you copy you learn.
Also one way to stretch your dollars is to research on line or at the library. You can read up on the real vehicles as the glue or paint dries on your's.Making mistakes is part of learning, but go slowly and the mistakes will be fewer.Just remember the point is to have Fun.
Hope this helps
Dave Manning
