Adam,
I suppose if we were all thoroughly grown up and liberal minded about such matters, every single one of those subjects could be modelled without causing offence- if it was in an accurate historical context, or in a justifiable artistic context.
Trouble is, as nations and individuals, we aren't all that grown up and we have a stack of double standards and chips on our collective shoulders. As such, our ideas of offensive material are unique to ourselves and society's idea of offence is based on a low-ish common denominator which is different from country to country.
Taking a cue from Marlon Brando in Apocolypse Now, consider the pilots who weren't allowed to paint 'f****' on their bomb laden aircraft because it was obscence.
Not arguing whether any war or individual action was wrong, or who's ideas about offensive material are right, just saying that we all have our own perspective. Would that Verlinden figure have more impact to someone who had been on the wrong end of racial abuse? Is a ban on Swastikas really that much different from a ban on flag burning?
The point is, a knee jerk reaction of 'anything goes' is just as short sighted and dumb as saying 'censor everything'.
