Late 70's-Early 80's was the Monogram M4's, a few Italeri Hetzer, Sherman M4A1, Marder III, and Stug IV. Then on a trip in 82 to Fort Knox for my brothers graduation from boot camp, I discovered the Tamiya PzKpfw IV and the rest is history. At that time you could find the Tamiya kits in Woolworths, Ben Franklin stores and most department stores. Modeling wasn't lean, it was simplified, and at least I recall actually completing a few models and only worked on one at a time.PE and Resin may have improved models, but not necessarily modeling. It may get slammed now, but the Tamiya Tiger I kit that was released in 89 was a turning point for the hobby. Italeri had done its best armor kits and up until that time was genreally superior to Tamiya in detail and accuracy. The Tiger I changed that, and started the process that today gives us super detailed kits right out of the box.And some of the Italeri kits from that time still stand up today (Sherman, M47 Patton, and German 234 armored cars) comes to mind. Oh, and the Monogram 32nd kits were about $5, can't find 'em on E-bay for that these days!
Cheers
Jason
