It's the wheels. Jentz's research reveals that there were no immediate plans to put steel wheels on the Panther F. Unfortunately I did not learn the reason for this until it was too late. The kit comes with rubber rimmed wheels and steel wheels. I managed to ruin both sets many years ago. I good friend of mine supplied me with a set of steel wheels last fall, which I'm very grateful for. I told him I was going to build it as a steel wheel version and he kindly sent them to me.
I knew that the factories that were in the process of manufacturing the Panther F did not have any steel wheels on hand. I had assumed that this was only a temporary situation and that standard production Panther Fs would have steel wheels had the war lingered.
I've since then learned that the steel wheels were on hold for newly designed tracks. The steel wheeled Panther Gs produced around September 1944 had problems with the guide horns shearing IIRC. At any rate the wheel and track combination was mechanically unreliable. It was determined that a new track had to be designed before steel wheels could be used on the Panther series. This had not occurred by the spring of 1945 and Panther manufactures were not anticipating a solution to the problem in their manufacturing plans.
As such the Panther F with rubber rimmed wheels at least was on the assembly line at the end of hostilities but the steel wheeled version is a true paper panzer. On top of that as far as I know - no one knows what the tracks would have looked like, or if there was any progress at all in developing track for a steel wheeled Panther F. In retrospect if I had it to do over again I’d make the Panther F a rubber rimmed wheeled vehicle. |
