Hi.

"I was under the impression that an unstated rule among the modelling community was the avoidance of gore in dioramas..."

That's a pretty common guideline. I don't know why. I think it's because most people don't want to be reminded of why guns, tanks etc exist.

I think the examples you give are all things that would cause a hue and cry, just like the items we're discussing now. Do you see this item being accepted more easily than the shoe-shine figure presented by Verlinden?

I don't see "easy acceptance of a diorama of Nazis executing Jews..."! This whole thread seems to suggest that there are a lot of issues being raised, none of them condoning the depicted actions, and many don't condone the depiction of the actions!!

There are not many other dioramas or vignettes out there depicting such a scene. There was a similar reaction to the Omaha beach diorama posted here some months ago. People got really upset at that because there was blood shown... It's not the same thing, but there was quite a reaction to a 'realistic' depiction of war's horror.

I'm not sure I'd ever want to make a vignette or diorama like the one under discussion, but I don't think its existence means that people are more ready to depict the execution of Jews rather than others. In Western society there is more exposure to the Holocaust rather than many other events of horror. There have been many genocides. Do I want to see a vignette/dio of each and every one? No.
Do I think it should not be shown? No.
If you made a dio of a lynching, would I think you're a racist? No.

You see this work as tasteless. I'm not sure if that's the case, but I do think it interesting how different folks interpret the scene. In that case, it is some kind of art/statement.

Andy
