A tasteful way to show a baby murdered?

A small crowd of people in front of a bombed out house (you name the country and the war). They are digging through the debris. One man hold's up a small shoe. A kneeling woman looks up, sobbing. She is holding a small doll.

Call it "Death of the Innocents."

Too much? Pointless? More pointless than the 1,732,899th diorama of a tank crew sitting around smoking some cigarettes and looking at a map, of which most fellow modelers are aware?

There is another great diorama, by Keith Forsythe I think, of civilians being herded to boxcars of a train by German soldiers. Not a dead body in sight---other than the ones you might see in your mind.

The only other Holocaust diorama I recall seeing actually appeared in the old Military Modeling magazine, showing the liberation of a death camp by US soldiers.

I found these two dioramas just as moving as Park's, even though I am intimately aware of these tragedies.

I'm also moved when I look at Michaelangelo's "Pieta." What is a sculpture other than an older and more artistically respected form of modeling? Here you have the three-dimensional rendering of the body of an executed holy man in the arms of his grieving mother. Pointless? Tasteless?

Taste certainly is a personal thing. Many see modeling as "just a hobby." Some see it as a business and an opportunity to make money. And a few see it as an art form that can transcend its toy store image and move people to think and---more importantly, in my opinion---to feel.

I respect the hobbyists (particularly those who can politely debate a "controversial" topic such as this one). I'm grateful for the businessmen who feed my habit. I admire the artists who breathe life into their models or dioramas, even when the subject might be death.
