I think as modelers we open ourselves up to a certain amount of scrutiny just by displaying our works. Its inevitabal that somebody will find a flaw in the colors used or a brush stroke in the paint. But to accuse somebody of being a Nazi because they have done a Panzer or 2 is simply ludicrous. I'm sure in the whole of the modeling world there have been a few modelers that have chosen to glorify their political belifes by building a V-2 rocket kit with a huge swastika on it but you would have to admit those "types" are in the very low minority.
As a movie buff I see many parallels in making a diorama for a contest or show, and making a flick for public viewing. We want to see them both viewed and admired and possibly win accolades of some type. The director is seen as a man of vision, whos conviction to telling the truth as he sees it garners him praise and acclaim. But for some reason the modeler is seen as a lone nut that sits in his parents basement sniffig glue when its not being used on a model. And who freeze frames "The Great Escape" so he can get the board count right in the tunnel of the diorama he's doing. I would have to ask those who would point their accusing fingers if they would label MR.SPIELBERG a Nazi for making "Schindlers List".
Building a model of a Messershmitt no more make the builder a Nazi than waving a white flag would make them French.
To put this all in perspective I would have to say that as modelers we try to tell a tale. A short story. A snapshot of our history. Not our history as Americans, or Germans, or British, or Vietnamese, or even Iraqis. But OUR history as human beings in the most inhumane times and circumstances of our existance, WAR.
To ignore the past means you are doomed to repeat it. Modelers just like to remember the past in 1/35th scale |
