Jim, dont take anything I say here wrong, just thinking out loud.

It would seem to me that your probably seeing AFV at the MVTF in one of three states. (I could be wrong, if so please correct me)

1. Totally trashed, as received from the field/river or whatever.
2. Torn appart in the process of restoration.
3. Fully restored, looking like it just rolled off the show room floor. (I have had the pleasure of touring the MVTF and they do a WONDERFUL job).

While I cant speak for any other modelers, I am not trying to replacate ANY of those states. What I usually shoot for is an AFV not too badly damaged, but used, meaning muddy or dusty with some chipps or scratches. I do not in any way try to fool anyone into thinking I actually achieve an accurate representation, but I have fun. Notice I said SOME chipps. My own opinion is many modelers go over board with the chipping and rust. From what I understand, very few AFV survived long enough in battle to collect many paint chips or rust. Mud and dust and fuel (and possibly blood) are another issue, and are totally up to the discression of the builder. Now, if a modeler is TRYING to replacate an old AFV just dug out of the back 40, than I can understand the chipping fadeing and rust. But in those cases, many/most of the fine detail would probably be missing, having been liberated or just fallen appart.

Just my opinion.
