The origins of some universal parts probably become lost in the fray,as you mentioned steering wheels ,lights,seats etc.I think companies like DML pretty much did the right thing by acknowledging(contracting and paying for)sub assembly parts to the various kits they produced when they first started.
There may be cases when companies negotiated a deal that is not mentioned on the box anywhere, so who knows anymore unless the original designer speaks up.
It does seem pretty shadey when you get a so called "new kit" or upgrade only to find the parts layout are dead on in layout to another company's product.
I admit to being a bit of a boy scout here,but I think the "line" is crossed when its appearently a copy and no pedigree of the original parts are mentioned or compensated $$$ for.
IF someone cobbles together parts from the spares box and makes resin copies for his friends,that is fair use as far as I am concerned.
If a company does the same thing,perhaps they should be paying some form of royalties?.....
