I personally don't see any value in selling models on the internet (or selling my models in general). If one calculates the amount of time and effort it takes to build a model, then charge a "decent" rate, what would the the price?

FSM often lists the time it takes to construct a model in the magazine. Let's assume 25 hours for a Tamiya class kit of a full sized tank, built to the review standards of that magazine. I earn @ $15/hr at my day job. Lets also assume the kit costs $25 (with paints, add a few to make it $30). Shipping is $5. Therefore, the kit should sell for 25 * 15 + 30 = $355! That's quite a price for what I would consider "reasonable" compensation, and I doubt my models would get that amount (though you never know...).

I've sometimes thought about going into a side business painting WWII wargames figures. Things like tanks and the like I can churn out in no time. Would it be worth it, though? Most of the time, I can't see the compensation being worthwhile unless I am a top painter with a name, and I invest a good deal of work into the piece. A good painter can almost make a living painting figures professionally, but I'll bet the number of people doing that is countable on my fingers...AND they have to compete with rock-bottom painters from Sri Lanka...

Damon.
