While it would be nice to support the local shops religiously, there is a fine line supporting and local shop and making it one of my favourite charities.

In Canada, since 2002-2003, Borgfeldt has pretty much destroyed the demand for Tamiya static kits with their obscene Suggested Retail Price. You can pretty much take the MSRP Yen price x 2.5 and convert to $Cdn to get a good approximation on local pricing.

When the Tamiya 1/20 William BMW FW-24 was released it was $76Cdn for what cost just $34Cdn back in 2003. With today's exchange rate it is even cheaper, just $28Cdn. A Tamiya 1/35 Famo is $130Cdn locally, but just $54 in Japan. Do you really expect me to ignore this difference and buy locally?

The last time I ordered from Japan, I saved $180Cdn on ONE order. And that is after shipping and Customs charges. AND, I had what I wanted weeks before any local shop could dream about putting the stuff on their shelves. Sorry, but to get the stuff locally and spend another $180 unnecessarily would have been just plain dumb.

I don't even think about buying a Tamiya kit in a local shop anymore unless the price has been slashed to what they should be priced at.

While I don't mind mail ordering, I don't do it often. Borgfeldt cost local shops business and in the long run, also cost Tamiya Japan business since now I'm not an impulsive shopper any longer.

However, some of the money I don't spend on Tamiya stuff goes to Dragon and Trumpeter kits since the importers of these kits haven't gone insane.

And thats my $180Cdn.

Ken

P.S. Negotiate, why on Earth should a hobby store customer have to even think about having to negotiate over the price of a model?
