It's true that a lot of the PE stuff could be done in styrene. There are high pressure injection moulding machines that can mould wafer thin styrene parts, but they are very, very expensive to run. Photo-etched parts are a lot cheaper.

I don't think screening could readily be done in anything other than PE for as cheap. I suppose die-cut Nylon screening could be used...?
