Don't be so quick to write-off what a compact camera is capable of producing.

Here are some pix taken with my modest FujiFilm Fine A203 (2 Megapixel , NO aperature and NO shutter priority):

Shallow depth of field can also add interest or implied motion to a pix:

You should be able to take some damn decent pix with a 5MP digicam that has a 2-19" macro range!!
