I forgot to mention to compare the depth of field in these two pic:

Note, that the first pic has a shallow depth of field and its deeper in the second pic.

Just move farther away to increase the depth of field. Then when you load your 5MP image, you can crop the portion that interests you.

As Mark said, you have to experiment more to get to know your camera's strengths and weaknesses when taking model and macro pix.
