There are also "huge" upfront costs when manufacturers give us an open-topped vehicle like a Hummel, Wespe, or M40. The detailed fighting compartments are just interiors without roofs.

One would think the big boys would want to capture these sales rather than leave them for the aftermarket. Certainly that seems what DML and AFV Club are doing with kits that include photoetch and aluminum barrels. You get "average" modelers to attempt to use these products without having to buy a $25 dollar package of brass or track down what aftermarket company offers replacement barrels, and you start to build the market.

Anything can be sold if marketed in the right way. Evidence? The pet rock and Chia pets.
