Yeah, I think that pretty much covers it.
_We_ generally prefer a light colour knowing we are priming or at least painting in the end, however, I suspect a large part of the market is going to people who build out of the box and who would just a soon not paint. These people don't show up at contests, clubs or have their models in store windows, but I think they make up the bulk of the models sold.
Lets face it, models are moulded in quantities of several tens of thousands per run. Take a quick estimation of all the dedicated modelers who are in clubs all over and you see that the world polulation isn't going to be too many tens of thousands in total much less will they all buy each kit produced (no matter what my wife thinks!). The rest of the models moulded have to be sold to a much more mass market and the casual builder is that person.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
