Glenn,
This will no doubt sound funny, but I have to envision the finished kit
in some sort of scene.I tend to build with an eye towards placing the model in a vignette or diorama, and that way I am better able to make all the adjustments needed i.e. weathering,dents-dings-bent and missing things etc.I spend time visualizing some sort of terrain for the vehicle to be operating in,and how I will create that also.
I do build some kits as stand alone vehicles but most often they don't get started until I can see them in some sort of scene. If the finished project is close to what I "saw" then I tend to be happy despite any faults.
Ofcourse none of this has any affect on my buying habits-you know the "Defense Budget"....
see you all in therapy
Dave Manning
