Its a good question, to my recall I've never seen a model win because it has this or that PE set or conversion, it seems that the quality of the build, painting and finishing take precedence before the aftermarket. Not that you don't see it, you can have every aftermarket set to detail a model but if your finish stinks, don't expect to place.
I have changed the way I model aswell, I've given up on the extensive PE sets and the like and just keep it to screens and tracks if the kit needs them. I then focus my energy on painting and weathering.
