Hi Mark,
I fully understand your predicament, and I offer you a possible solution that cured me, 1/48. The new Tamiya stuff in this scale is marvelous, you can complete one in an evening or two. You'll be impressed with the level of detail I'm sure. Don't worry about the aftermarket stuff, just build it OOTB. I usually build one or two in between the 500 part 1/35 Dragon stuff. You get the satisfaction of completing a build in a weekend, and you're delivered of the AMS which usually kills my motivation.
