I agree with Paul. Even if "the West" descends into modelling obscurity (which for local manufacturers...at least in the US and UK it already has) theres the rest of the world to consider...
One thing I never buy is the idea that "video games" and a culture of Instant Gratification will kill the hobby. EVERY SINGLE HOBBY I participate in, these factors are lamented about as being the "death of the hobby." I grew up in the Video Game era. I had an INtellivision, while my friends were playing with Colicovision or Ataris. After the death of the 1st GEN console games, we got Nintendoes, Segas, and (now) Xboxes and PLaystations. I don"t think I had a single friend that did NOT have a video game system or PC to game on. And yet I (and a few others) have found modelling. COnsider: IN Ages Past (the Dark Ages) kids built models because "its the thing to do." How many stuck with it and model now? If a kid picks up a model now, even with those distractions, I think it more likely he will be a lifelong modeller, compared to the Baby Boomer generation.
I see the same thing in my other hobby of Role Playing Games: I see the same lamentations. And you know, the average demographic of gamers is the 20-40 age bracket. And if you want to talk about a niche hobby that has a geeky stigma, RPGs don"t get much worse...and have even MORE competition from video games.
But of course people can do BOTH. I play WoW, build models, play RPGs, and wargame, all at the same time. One may occupy my attention more than another at some point...that keeps things fresh.
