There hasn't been a good thread here in awhile, so I guess it's time. This actually got started on the vendors page, but I thought I'd move it here.
My dad was a member of US Army railway battalion, he served from late 44-45 in the Low Countries based out of Antwerp. Two stories I remember him telling that have the ring of truth to them are these:
1.) I actually saw photos of this. One weekend they somehow had killed a couple of deer. So, they had a venison roast on the beach along the Channel coast. Now the interesting thing is that along with the venison they got a hold of ears of corn and roasted that too. Which to their surprise shocked the Belgium or Dutch local residents. In Europe, corn is or was strictly for feeding livestock.
2.) US railway troops were issued the M1 carbine.
Anyone who has spent any time around trains will tell you how impractical this is. Slung the carbine would continually get in the way, either the butt or the barrel hanging up as you were climbing around the couplings and between cars.
Their solution was to simply bust off the butt, list it as LIA (Lost In Action) and get themselves issued a Thompson or burp gun.
Any dio ideas there? |
